Immigration troubles

Let's talk about immigration. There is a convoy of refugees in Mexico making their way to get into the U.S. President Trump has ordered troops to be posted to stop them from entering. These troops had to miss Thanksgiving with their families to protect the border. He has also given them the right to use force if necessary. This is a mess of problems that can be solved in a number of ways. First, build a wall from California to the bottom of Texas. We need a wall because there are thousands of illegal immigrants coming from Mexico each year. I am not saying that we should close our border to everyone but we should monitor who comes in to keep criminals and other bad entities from entering. No matter the cost, we need to secure our border. I agree with Trump on building a wall but I am not so sure on the cost. With a wall, we will be able to protect the border and not have to send troops to the border for security. Our immigration policy needs to change with the times. If there is one thing this country has, it is a problem with change. It takes forever for anything to change but our policy needs to change in a hurry. We are a country built by immigrants. We are all immigrants so it is hypocritical to close our borders due to our policy. We should accept all with open arms but keep an eye out for the bad apples in the bunch. We are a growing nation and there are still jobs that need to be filled. So I hope one day there is someone in the government who has the same views as me and is not afraid to create change.

commentary on "my vote won't make a difference"

I agree about why voting matters. It is our duty as citizens of this great nation to go out and vote, but at the same time we should be educated to vote. However, Texas has been known to be Republican for a long time so to say that "We are upon a huge race that could determine if Texas will go republican for the first time in many of our lifetimes, even bigger than that determine if our vote will turn the House of Representatives to democratic" is contradictory. If you're talking about the Beto vs. Cruz race, then you should just say so, but saying "a huge race" is just too vague due to the fact there were many races going on and many Democratic candidates in Texas running for office. To say that "This election could be the biggest aid to the possible realignment of our Nation and State" would mean that as a nation and as a state, there is one major issue we as a country are split upon. However, this is not what we are not going through because there are too many issues that need to be resolved like gun control, border security, and so on. Regardless, I completely agree that without social media that tries to appeal to the young adult crowd, voter turnout would be a lot lower. Voting is one of the first of many steps in the right direction to change this country for the better.

Gerrymandering is a no no

Gerrymandering is a dirty way to split up votes in the US. This method should not exist for many reasons. For one it is used to prevent change in the US because of one political party having too much power preventing change to occur. Second this method prevents votes from mattering if the vote is being taken and basically put in with an opposing parties district votes. Third giving the right to draw the district lines to a party is giving too much power to the political parties. If you look on a map today of any state in America there is evidence of Gerrymandering everywhere. A great example of this is Austin Texas which has been split apart in four different ways because of the way people tend to vote. Austin is known for being a hip city and being mostly democratic. The Republicans know this as well and have drawn the district lines so that Austin voters would not matter as much because the power of their vote has been watered down so in the long run they can have most of the seats in the House of Representatives. Is it too much to have a fair chance to win in this great country of ours? This method just makes things even harder for there to be change in America. This should not exist for all the reasons listed in this blog because it is hurting America. Change is slow in America already but this just prolongs it much more.

Trumps calling

In the article “What Trump needs to do now with Saudi Arabia” by Marc Thiessen, the intended audience is those who believe Trump needs to take action with the situation occurring with Saudi Arabia. For instance, it is stated in the article “How does Trump reconcile these three irreconcilable realities? The answer is: He can’t. The result is going to be unpleasant and unsatisfying” (Thiessen). This statement shows that he does not believe that Trump will be able to solve the problem and the intended audience is likely to be people who feel the same way. The author, Marc Thiessen, is a credible author because it is stated that he served as chief speechwriter to two members of the government, President George W. Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. As a result, the reader knows that Thiessen is reliable because he has experience with governmental affairs. Thiessen’s claim is that Trump needs to take action with the situation in Saudi Arabia; however, he is not sure whether Trump will do so. In the article, Thiessen states certain actions that he believes Trump should take: “Trump should make clear that Saudi Arabia’s actions have squandered…”  (Thiessen). The logic that Thiessen uses is that Saudi Arabia needs the U.S. and the U.S. needs Saudi Arabia. As a result, Trump needs to take action in order to maintain this relationship. I agree with the author of this article, based on the fact that Saudi Arabia was Trump’s first foreign trip and he put the crown prince in front of his own prestige (Thessien). Action must be taken in order to preserve and maintain the U.S.’s presence in foreign affairs.

Brett Kavanaugh's case

In the article How Brett Kavanaugh Failed by The Editorial Board within the New York Times, the author informs the reader about how the court hearing went south for Brett Kavanaugh. The author explained all of the different ways Brett Kavanaugh messed up in trying to clear his name. If the reader did not know what was going on with the Kavanaugh situation after reading the first couple of paragraphs in the article, the reader would be well informed enough to follow the next set of paragraphs. The author of the article gives many good details, including the reasons why Brett Kavanaugh did a poor job when he attempted to explain himself and the situation he was in. In a very negative way, the author gives his opinion on the answers Brett Kavanaugh gave, exclaiming about trust, and even to go so far as to calling Brett Kavanaugh a jerk, which is not very professional but gets the author’s point across nevertheless. After that, further into the article, the author dives into the history of Brett Kavanaugh as a Republican, which was very interesting to say the least, but shows what kind of man he used to be. Then the author goes into great detail about what happened to past nominees when they were nominated by past presidents and what it would it mean if Brett Kavanaugh was able to get into the Senate, which I did not find necessary because the whole point of the article was to explain how he failed to prove his innocence.

In the article "Chinese anger at Us sanctions for Russian weapons purchases" by the BBC news China wanted to buy more weapons from Russia but can't because the US put sanctions on Russian weapons. In this article China explains its frustration about the US sanctions and threatens the US to withdraw the sanctions or face the consequences. The article goes into detail about what sanctions do and what their effects have on countries. This article also talks about whether it's still a good practice to place sanctions on countries or is it slowly making relationships worse in the long run.
